Diablo 2, by
Blizzard Entertainment is the most popular action RPG of all time. It has an engaging
story, addictive leveling system and great replay value. While the graphics are
quite outdated by now, many gamers still go back to Diablo 2 to get their
action RPG fix.
Since the
release of Diablo 2 way back in June 2000, a lot of games like Diablo have
popped up. These are referred to as Diablo clones. Some of them are really good
and play out just like Diablo while improving several core aspects of the game.
Here is a list of the best Diablo 2 clones.
5. Diablo III
Diablo III -
the most obvious game in this list, as it is a sequel to Diablo 2. However,
since it is in the same series, I am going to place this in the fifth place as
an honorable mention, as I want to focus more on the other games by different
developers.
There are
several differences between the two games and players are divided about which
one is the better Diablo game. Both have their ups and downs and I feel it's
unfair to compare them in such a way, since Diablo 3 came out 12 years later. I
recommend looking them as separate games and as such they are both really great
and definitely worth picking up.
There are 5
different character classes in the base Diablo 3 game. These are: Barbarian,
Wizard, Monk, Demon Hunter and Witch Doctor. You unlock skills for your character
as you level up and in order to enhance your skills, you have to find skill
runes, which offer various improvements to a certain skill. Visually, the game
looks excellent and features destructible environments.
Recently,
Diablo 3 received its first expansion pack: Reaper of Souls. It adds a new
character class, the Crusader, who specializes in defensive gameplay. They also
raised the level cap from 60 to 70 and added a fifth act to the game. Of course
there are also numerous new skills, runes and items added to the game.
Sacred 2:
Fallen Angel is a great action RPG. The first thing you notice, what makes it
different from Diablo 2 is that you can choose between 2 campaigns: Light and
Shadow. The choice you make in the beginning of the game, affects how the story
progresses, whereas in Diablo, you don't have to make any choices about the
story at all.
The game
offers 6 character classes(7 with the expansion), which all look and feel
different and they can be leveled up to level 200. Another special feature of
Sacred 2 are mounts, the player can use a mounts to move around the map
quicker, they also affect your stats and even allow you to do some limited
mounted combat.
Sacred 2
feels like it mixed Diablo's hack and slash gameplay with classical RPG
elements and the result is interesting. If you are a fan of action RPGs, then I
recommend you give this game a try.
3. Torchlight II
Torchlight
II is another great game like Diablo 2, sending you off to explore randomly
generated dungeons and overland areas in order to complete various quests and
find awesome loot.
The game has
4 character classes available, all of them are completely unique from one
another. The classes are:
1) The
engineer - A melee fighter, who can summon bots to aid him.
2) The
outlander - A rogue, who uses ranged weapons.
3) The
berserker - A heavy melee fighter and tank who can summon spirit animals.
4) The
embermage - A spellcaster, who uses elemental magic to damage his enemies.
You can also
customize your character a bit, by allowing you to choose gender, face type and
hair styles. Besides class-specific skills, you can find spell scrolls that
grant you additional abilities, regardless of your class.
One of the
most interesting features of the game is the pet system. When creating your
character, you can choose from a variety of pets to permanently accompany you.
They have a separate inventory, so you can use them to carry more loot and even
send your pet to town to sell it and then return to you after a little while.
Pets also help you in fights, you can catch fish and then feed them to your
pet, which allows them to transform into other deadly creatures temporarily.
2. Titan Quest
Titan Quest
is heavily based on ancient mythology and allows you to fight centaurs, hydras,
cyclops and other mythological beasts. The plot sees you being a hero, who
saves the world from being overrun by monsters. You will experience Ancient
Greece, Ancient Egypt and The Orient, with the expansion pack called Immortal
Throne, you can even fight in the Underworld.
The
character progression in Titan Quest is interesting, because there aren't any
predefined classes from the start. Instead you have to choose from 8 masteries
in the game (9 with the expansion) and every character can pick two. This
allows for some pretty fun and diverse combinations, as every mastery has
unique skills and affects your stats differently.
Graphically
speaking, the game looks beautiful and vibrant, there is a ragdoll physics
engine, which makes the combat feel really satisfying. The gameplay feels very
much like Diablo, which is a good thing. They chose to stick with the
proven formula, while adding several great new features of their own.
1. Path of Exile
Path of
Exile is developed by Grinding Gear Games, who operate in New Zealand. It
borrows a lot from Diablo 2 and adds in new ideas of its own and the result is
fantastic. The best part is that the game is completely free, with the option
to buy cosmetic upgrades for real money. The currency used in-game is based on
different orbs and scrolls, instead of gold or cash. You can use these orbs to
improve/alter items or use them to barter with other players.
There are 7
classes: Marauder, Duelist, Shadow, Witch, Ranger, Templar and Scion. The
passive skill tree is massive and universal for everyone, choosing a class only
affects the starting locations. You can grab nodes from where ever you want and
move along the tree, the nodes give bonuses to various weapon types, increase
health and much more. There are also special nodes, that change the playstyle
of your character radically. For example, your character never misses a hit,
but can't perform critical hits.
In order to
get active skills, you have to find skill gems, which can be dropped by
monsters or received as quest rewards. You can use this skill gems by placing
them inside your equipment sockets. As you gain experience, the skill gems
level up, becoming more useful. There are also support gems that give benefits
to active skills. This design gives the player full control over the
development of his character.
The game
currently has 3 acts and 3 difficulty levels. The difficulty works just like in
Diablo 2: once you finish normal difficulty, you progress to the next one while
keeping your current stats/equipment. The game is played online and when you
enter towns, you actually see other players. Outside of towns you are always
alone, unless you form a party with your friends or random players.
This game is absolutely amazing and I can't recommend it enough. If you liked Diablo 2, definitely go give this one a shot, since its free you have nothing to lose.
